Last night I turned a vase on my lathe. It's buggy, spalted sweetgum which is still wet. I'm drying the vase in ambient room air now and need to kill the bugs in the wood before I do a final turning/sanding/finish. I think the bug is an adult wood boring beetle but there may be others.

Without getting other input, I may microwave in in short time increments until I get it up to around 200F. Alternatively, I might put it in a kill jar with cotton soaked in acetone. I just don't know if either method would be 100% effective. I have gently microwaved pieces before and noticed that colored areas of the wood sometimes bleeds into lighter areas.

Does anyone have a favorite way to kill bugs that won't damage the piece?
