Here is a little mock up. I couldn't block out the existing one, but this will give you a bit of an idea of how a new slightly more French look would bring this room to its full glory!

I put the DaVinci in the room. Scale might b a bit off, and of course, you have to measure the width of the lovely table and ceiling height to get the right fixture. But this is the idea. Simple country French look.

Do you like goldleaf or silverleaf ? If yes you can purchase sheets of them and brush on the chandelier, I on the other hand would leave it black and just change the shades.

Omg. I'm in love with the davinci!!! Since we just replaced our floors and painted EVERYTHING, we r running low on funds at the moment, but as soon as I get my grubby little hands on some dough, I'm going to upgrade. In the meantime though...

I really like the edison bulbs! Whimsical and eclectic. I don't know if both shapes work together, I'm partial to the round. Maybe use the twine/rope around the exposed white bases?

No rope around ceramic base. Fire hazard. I think the seed glass ovals are best. The cover white base. However, when you can I found another similar chandelier for less $$$. I will post it if I can from my mini iPad. If I can't I will post it later for you to put in your idea book for later.

The clear seeded glass looks great. You can spray paint that plastic base so it disappears. The Edison bulbs are too 'coffee shop' for this light...

after looking at the cost for those replacements, you would be better off getting a new light. It's going to cost you almost 200 bucks for the new shades!

I think that is a ceramic base not plastic, but I could be wrong. In any case, the seeded glass covers it the best. But agree, buying the glass pieces kind of waste of money. Save that toward new chandelier. This look is builder 2006.

I am sure that glass can't be that expensive if you can get it at a Home Depot or Lowes... I know there are alot of comments about just getting rid of it but I think if you can make it nicer for now maybe someone will want it when you do change it out... As a society we are so very wasteful... just throw it out and get another! USe it for now then give it away for someone else to enjoy - I am sure there are plenty of people who wouldn't mind a nice fixture.

Debbi, where did any of us say 'throw it out?" She can always sell it or put it in another room. All we said is the money spent on replacement glass (she needs a lot of them) would pay for a new one. And the cheap ones at HD or Lowes, are just about the same as what she has so why would she do that? The other ones I showed her, that she likes, will cost about 25-$30 each. Times 8. you do the math.

I like idea of putting seeded glass shades. I think the white just does not fit the look of your overall room color choices and style. I think painting black and adding rope was a nice option, it looks much better black then the original color, for sure!

I think this pretty good! Just needs some tweaking. Look on line for the shades; as long as you know the measure on the flange for the glass you can find them cheaper. Check places like restore or consignment shops too. Also for crystals. Some large crystals hanging from this would look beautiful! I have the ultimate cheap chandy in my dining room! So ugly!!! But I added shades to mine instead of glass. Hung crystals all over the darn thing! Will get around to replacing it eventually;)))

Oh, and you can rub a little gold wax here and there to liven it up. But not much! ... my ugly chandy;)

Oh, and I wanted to tell you your dining room is very lovely! If you keep this fixture you might want to replace the raffia with gold wire. I like the thought though; clever!

You could use black electrical tape to cover the white threading. It will blend right in and will be safe.

@ Beth H - I didn't say that anyone on this thread said to throw it out.... ... I am merely encouraging her to complete her project and enjoy it, then when the time comes to change it she can pass along a beautiful fixture. That is all - no more no less - I wasn't accusing people of anything . I am sure Brandy is doing the math of the glass pieces she may choose versus a new fixture and in the end will do what is best for her.

I think that is what you are referring to...I didn't mean for it to read like an attack on anyone in particular - I would have added a name if that was the case... I just see a lot of waste in my field and I want to encourage people to upcycle more...

In the end as long as Brandy is happy with her chandelier and her space that is all one can hope for.....

Thank you sooooo much for all of your advice. In the meantime, I switched out the rope for a light touch of gold rub n buff and decided to keep the glass shades for now. Ultimately I will replace it, but I will make sure I donate this one to a good place.

And now it's gold! Ta Da!!! And I'm tinting the glass. I've done three so far. I like it. What do you think? My new chandelier arrives tomorrow, but I couldn't stop tinkering with this one.

Can't wait to see new one! I admire your creativity. Make sure to hang the new one 30-32" over table from bottom of fixture to table top.

the gold light actually looks pretty good in that room now. that's a nice picture. I love your wall color w/the gold accent. however, the orangey chairs,,,,,,,something white, glam-ish w/brass nail head accents, would top off the look.

while the gold is OK, it is dated style for sure. It looks like you are moving toward a more "modern" style, judging from the gold vase on the floor in the corner? The art on the wall looks a bit more "modern", so you really need to change out the chandelier to fit that vibe.

Your chairs will need to be changed out as well, as Beth H indicated. Some upholstered type chairs. Even simple "parsons" type would work better. Now, if you are going for a "French look" like the French ladder back chairs, that is another story.

I have lots of French antiques in my house that are very special to me. We brought them back after our time living over seas. My house started out very French country, but I wanted something more fun and young. In January I changed out my floors from a dark wood to a white washed wood look tile and painted all of my walls. I wanted to keep my orange drapes because I love them, so I decided to try pairing them with Navy and cream for a new look. I love it.

I wasn't ready to invest in a dining room table (this was a super cheapo one in boring black) When I do replace it I want a REALLY nice one and I'll have to save up some money for that. Soooooo I decided to paint the table blue, stencil it white, paint the chairs orange and upholster them with blue, white, and gold cheetah fabric... all of the art in the room has some shade of orange, so i think it goes...

After originally posting this discussion and receiving feedback on my chandelier makeover, I decided to actually bite the bullet and buy a new one. It actually arrived today and it's gold with white beads and it is fabulous!!! And even though I had decided to replace mine, I just couldn't stop tinkering with the old one to see how i could change the look... I'm just having fun!

The vase in the corner is actually a cypress tree stump that was dug out of a lake and cleaned up. We found it in a small town on the coast of Florida. My house is full of weird things that I've found and love. The style is really all my own.... I know it's not for everybody though and that's ok.

I just wanted to share my journey and get feedback from people who could give me their honest opinions... thanks for helping!!!! I love how giving you guys have been with your time.

wow Brandy. very nice. now that I can see the whole room, they don't look as orange as I thought. wonderful job on the table. I know how much time and work those take. But yes, a larger table and new chairs will really work well in the space. lets see the new light
