What I am used to is these being split up in late summer, after the winter buds have been set. That's what a peony nursery just down the hill from me used to do.

Thank you for your reply, I never divided any of mine. I always just let them grow. I planted several varieties back then, all different colors. I know many people divide plants in spring. And I know from when my momma n I dug out my grandmother's peonies (this saddens me now) when I was a kid, it just seemed like it grew back with just the smallest pieces left in the ground. My mother and I had to dig them out several times. We had such a problem with the big black carpenter ants all over the flowers and yard because of those peonies. Now I'm all grown and wish we'd never dug them out. She had a very large patch of wonderful scented white ones growing along the foundation. Anyway, I still hope someone is willing to share, now or in the fall. Thanks again.

If you can't afford much, go to the garden centers. I even got some named smaller ones at Walmart for under $5.00. Maybe I am just lucky but they have gone into the ground and did really well.

tea4maddy, I don't divide any in the spring but will look for any that are easily separated or that I have duplicates of, more likely this fall, though. Feel free to message me and I'll let you know if there is anything I can send after mine start emerging in the next few weeks. My season starts a bit later than most because of our zone and altitude, keeps it cooler here for longer.....

You will almost always have ants and other bugs on peony flowers because the sap and nectar is sweet. I agree about looking at various stores such as hardware and box stores. Was curious today when picking up cat food at wally world and looked to see if they had any peonies but there were none in the various displays. That particular store does not carry many of the things that the other ones in the area have. If you have a couple and you do not find at one go to another.

If you have an Aldi near you, they have bagged root divisions for $1.69. No special varieties, but darn cheap. I bought a few - while small, they all had 3-4 eyes.

You can plant potted plants now but shouldn't divide peonies until September.

Oh, and I have either the exact cultivar in your photo, or one that is very similar.

Tony I would probably CRY if you have the same cultivar! I LOVED those peonies. Killed me to lose everything.
