Need Help for My Kitchen

last modified: 9 years ago

I would appreciate any critiques/input on my kitchen layout design. Esp. on the corner stove/hood area (right lower area). I am concerned about the functionality of the design (such as whether the upper cabinet doors adjacent to the corner stove can open/close without hitting the hood and their accessibility ). Also would love to hear any experiences in using a corner stove/hood. Is it ergonomically sound? Any special issues with construction or using this type (corner stove) of setup. Thank you.

I have no experience with corner stoves, although I think they can be very attractive. Any diagonal/corner appliance wastes space, but you have plenty of storage space.

Have you considered squaring off the island, to make a larger prep space? You could make the range hood the focal point from the living space, and you'd have a separate clean-up area, with no zone crossing. It would be very easy for a helper to load or unload the DWs, or set the table, without crossing into your prep space. Are you planning to have all drawer bases?

The base cabinets on the range run could be made deeper, or pulled out from the wall to be flush with the bumped in corner, which would give you deeper counters.

Is this new construction or a remodel of an existing house? If it is new construction or a major remodel could the bump out be extended all the way to the right wall? The bump out is giving you more space but creating a more complicated and chopped up design.

Thank you for the reply. This is a renovation project. The shape of this kitchen is limited by the strict set back rules. The "bump out" is actually the existing structure. And the corner stove area is the allowable addition area. Yes, it's been challenging to design the kitchen as results.

I'll let the design gurus work their magic, but I wanted to address your concern with the corner stove. I've had two kitchens with a 36" corner cooktop. My first was a remodel where our KD suggested this as well as an island sort of similar to what is on your design, but much smaller. It worked well for us. I do the cooking, so there is not an issue with two people trying to work side-by-side. My upper cabinets would hit the corner of our chimney hood, so our installer added a cable to limit how wide each side closest to the hood could open. It was well over 90 degrees, so wasn't an issue.

    This was our previous kitchen.

Three years ago we built in a 55+ development. The shell of the house was done when we found it, so I did not have total control over the design. I honestly hate corners, so again went with a corner cooktop. No regrets. This is our new kitchen. You can see, the basic design is very similar in both kitchens. My one regret is not having a prep sink in the island in our new home. Hope this helps!

Thank you so very much for your reply. It really helps me a lot and gives me a bit more reassurance for this design. Both of your kitchens look beautiful. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences and insights.
