What are these sprouts?

I planted mint last year without understanding the consequences and now I'm working to get rid of it. So, I decided to try and smother it by blocking light and covered the bed with newspaper and pizza boxes. I check on it periodically and I always find these annoying sprouts. I know those sren't mint, but what are they? I am hardly finding mint anymore, but these, they wont go away. They grow under the cardboard. I want to use this raised bed for cut flowers, but I don't want my plants getting murdered by them. Suggestions?

They will be more recognisable after they have greened up and straightened out. We also need to know the geographical location.

Oh. I'm in Houston , TX zone 9a. Should I uncover them and let them green up? I pull them right away so I've never given them a chance to grow.

There's no 'should' about it. If you definitely don't want anything growing there just keep removing them. But if you really want to know what they are we have to see them growing naturally.

Compare to Gnaphalium / Pseudognaphalium. I would dig out the roots of either in a cultivated area.
