That is true clover. Likely to be Dutch white clover. It will get white semispherical flowers that attract honey bees. If you don't want it, you will either need to patiently dig it out every few months (it seeds easily) or spray with Weed-b-Gon Chickweed, Clover, and Oxalis Killer. Regular WBG has clover listed, but the WBG-CCO is a better product to get rid of it.

Thanks for the response. I was looking at that product. My concern is I have a well and unsure how safe the product is. I may have to go old fashion and pull them. Would a pre emergent help prevent from spreading?

Clover is perennial, and it spreads, so pre-emergent isn't going to help here. It can take over and kill large patches of grass, ask me how I know.

You would be using a very tiny amount of herbicide if you spot spray. I don't think there's much chance of it reaching the water table. Or you could use glyphosate which breaks down fast when it hits the soil, but glyphosate will kill everything it touches (talking about plants, of course).

The half life of the chemical used to kill clover is between 1 and 14 days in the soil. By the time it reached the water table it's concentration would be negligible for human/animal harm.
