Scrubbing raw maple

Hi there!
I have some lumber that is going to be a butcher block counter top. It's lovely maple.

Unfortunately, during the winter my storeroom has been infested with mice.
There's poop and God knows what else on it.

This will not be a food prep service and it will be sealed.
What can I use to scrub and sanitize this maple, that will not oxidize the wood?

I hate @#$*! mice.

Wood bleach, or run it through a planer.

I have oxylic acid, which I was considering.

Hey. I was thinking about you today. What did you use for the light rail on your kitchen cabinets? I forgot what you said. Thanks!

I hate @#$*! mice as much as the next person but wouldn't stress over it. Just complete the project as planed. By the time final finish is applied,mouse cooties will be long gone. If you insist on remedial action,at any stage of project but before applying final finish,spritz project with 1 tbl spoon regular Clorox Laundry Bleach in 1 gallon of water and allow to air dry.

Hi Christine,

The light rail was a piece of nosing; 3/4" x 1 1/2" Same piece was used at the top of the cabinets to delineate between them and soffits.

Klem1, no need for nuclear bleach? I have it and am not afraid to use it! LOL!
Mouse poop is nothing. It's the mouse pee that totally grosses me out.

Casey, I always liked how that looked, so I'm going to figure that out for my own Bad Self. Don't know if you've been browsing kitchens, but I got my soapstone countertops in and am now encouraged to actually complete the kitchen.

Thanks all. Hate 'dem mouses. Gross little pigs. You'd never know I have three cats....

Just mild soap and water, but wear cloves and a mask.

mice can carry come nasty viruses (like hanta virus)

If you have it and afraid to use it,why are you keeping it around. More to the point,what are the risks,I might stop bleaching my whitey tighties and sanitizing kitchen prep surfaces with bleach.

I use it to bleach water stains out of antique doors. I've also used it to bleach cherry and pine. Keeping it around before it's useful.

Thanks, Lazy Gardens. If I were going to get sick, that would have happened a long time ago. With my 10 years of rebuilding, holes in my house, snakes (who take care of the mice in the summer) and other elements of nature? I can't be afraid of a what might make me sick. I grew up before they invented germs, I think.

That said, I still don't want to have that on what will be a counter space!
I appreciate it.
