I just use Home Depot dirt (with added vermiculite for drainage) and a gravel base at the bottom of the pot. The result is that I have huge, healthy beautiful trees by doing the exact thing that everyone tells me will create root-rot and a host of other problems. Been gardening that way for years -- never an issue.

For potting and hole amendment I dump equal number of bags of cheap home depot "timberline" top soil and their equally cheap compost (~$1.69 per bag) onto a spot under a starfruit tree and hoe in a bit of native soil (silver sandy loamy stuff) and let it be for a few weeks before using it.

My potted plants do pretty well as does anything I put in the ground with it. This seems to have good drainage as I never get puddles in pots, on the down side it is heavy due to the sand I mix in and that already in the stuff from HD.

Chobrego which HD dirt do you use?

For Fertilizer I use the stuff in a white bag from Excalibur or if I can't get it I use palm / avocado food with minors if I can find it and in Pompano Beach there's Universal Supply that has a good fruit tree fertilizer and a 50 lb bag is $18
