I sowed some seeds in winter directly into coconut fiber pots with seed starting mix. So I just need to put this in a bigger pot until they are big enough to go in the ground. They did have a much higher germination than expected.

I have tried the damp paper towel in a dish method and the peat moss in a dish method.

I don't like using peat because it's a finite resource, I usually use coir. I am using some peat because it's more acidic and I am finding quite a few trees like acidic soil.

I live in an apartment that doesn't have the strongest window light so I don't know about keeping them for a year then planting them. I wanted to get them going now so I could plant them outside this spring.

I think starting them in some kind of container with seed starter or coir would be a good idea, deep enough for the roots to grow for a couple of months. I have some seed starter mix so I think that is the next step.

Ken, what growing medium do you suggest using?
