Cutworms?

Could be. I have cutworms that do their deeds on seedlings. Never saw them way up on a plant before, though. No evident foilage damage, but I only saw a couple.

There are several varieties of "climbing cutworms" that go for leaves and buds. Although the lumped together label isn't really all that accurate since "cutworms" can be the larvae of several different types of night-flying moths. So their appearance and their actions are more along the line of "what mom taught me" (aka instincts) than the more common ground dwellers we usually see.

Gosh, I didn't even think of Bt-ing my tomatoes! But yes, that might be smart. I regularly Bt my collards and chard, and I guess I should spritz my tomatoes as well. They were all found in one corner of my patch, so someone lay eggs in that area, I guess. Yes, I've seen no foliage damage, but I don't want them around when there are fruit.

Bt works on all sorts larvae and some nymphs too. Gets hornworms, some stink bug nymphs. Corn earworm. Web worm in fruit trees. Even the squash bugs, as it is the larva that borrows into the stems when they hatch. Squash bug don't actually eat the plant so much as it is a favorite nest for eggs. The babies are what kills the plant
