We have a simple 1x6 for baseboards. Window and door trim is 1x4 with 1/2" overhang on header.

I've never thought of matching my baseboards to my kitchen cabinets in my entire 73 years on this earth! Do the baseboards that are appropriate for your house and go with your window frames. A classic look is always best.

Take a peek at your local public library for some books on trim work. I own one and have found it extremely useful over the years. I don't recall who authored mine, but it has examples of trim appropriate to periods of architecture, housing style, etc.

My house has no style. It was built in 2003 by KB Homes when they were throwing up homes for a quick turnaround and not paying any attention to details or craftsmanship. There is no trim around windows. The doors have just plain trim with no detail and all interior doors are just plain, flat hollow core MDF.

That's why I think something plain would work best, but the local home improvement stores don't have anything like that. My next step is visiting a trim store that I just heard about.

Ours are similar to the above. Everything is square cut. There are two levels of baseboard and a piece of quarter round shoe.
