For over kitchen table

Can the cord/wiring be swung to the side in order to be centered over the table? The access to electrical wiring at the ceiling is not quite centered over the table, so I'll need an pendant light fixture that has some extra cord allowance to adjust with a hook in the ceiling. I'd like to avoid ceiling drywall work if possible.
