From dismal to delightful

After 5 years of more pressing projects, this winter we finally gutted the kitchen of our 1920's cottage and took on a mixed DIY/self contracted kitchen remodel with a budget of $25,000.

BEFORE:

DURING:

In gutting the outer wall, my husband uncovered layer upon layer of the cottages history, and beneath it all he discovered some remarkable carpentry. No insulation either!

AFTER:

Still to do is the backsplash, which will be a mosaic of a variety of broken plates such as these:

I am in love with your cabinet color, if only my hubby would have went for that. Instead I am getting dark wood color with a teal back splash instead. Enjoy your new kitchen!

Thanks, Ken! We've discovered some parts do and others don't have insulation. When we gutted the bathroom, the pipes were wrapped in 1926 newspaper...that's a newer addition to the cottage, which is 800 square feet.

The flooring is the original fir floors, which were buried under umpteen layers of other flooring. None of it had asbestos, but it was still a pain to remove! The counters are soapstone (PA), which I love!

Our cabinet maker called it a happy color! Nodak, we live in Seattle, which is grey-grey-grey 350 days a year. Dark wood can look lovely (and a teal backsplash sounds great with it!), but this kitchen is so tiny, and faces north, so it really begged for something cheerful for all the grey days.

Such a charming kitchen! The bolder cabinet color definitely paid off. Well done and enjoy!
