Interesting! I don't recall seeing ones like that before. On individual plants, are all of the flowers that shape, or is there a mix of some being typical, and others pointed?

Cal poppies can come in many different shapes. there are quite a few different species, but you can tell those by whether they have a hypanthium or not. that is the ring under the petals which you can see in the lower left of this photo. it's present in this one, so it is the common cal poppy. check out the petals on this one i found near livermore:
