Leaning shed gets some help

My small barn/shed has been leaning precariously for some time now. This morning a guy who repairs barns stopped to give me his advice and an estimate to jack it up and redo the foundation elements under the corner posts. It involves cement and brick. He said he could do it for $2400.

I'm thinking it would cost me MUCH more than that to have this old building torn down and a new one built or even to buy one of the new storage barns. It's solid. So I gave him the ok. Now - I have to temporarily move everything out of it! ugh. I am happy that several years ago I purged in there but of course stuff accumulates again i.e. garden and carpentry things.

He even looked at my "Leaning Tower of Peesa", the old outhouse that I use for storage. He thinks it's very possible to do the same to it, probably even more easily.

And he also said they could install new gutters and down spouts on both, something that should have been down years ago. I don't recall the outhouse ever having a gutter. I blamed the tilting of both buildings primarily on groundhog activity. But diverting water away has to be very important.

Leaning Tower of Peesa! Love it!!! Glad you are saving the old buildings - the newer ones just don't have the same character and probably won't hold up as well unless, as you said, you spend much much more money.

Thanks. He finished it today. And after some excavating he discovered that there was concrete already there after the rotted beams had been removed so he ended up not doing as much concrete work as expected. So the cost wasn't anywhere near the $2400 he quoted.

He has to come back tho and re-do a patch of cement that he tried to fix and it's kind of ugly. I know it's just an old barn but still. Plus with the new foundation, now the big door has this gap at the bottom that wasn't there before. I didn't notice either of these things until I paid him and he left and I started to clean up the area. Of course. Even tho I walked down there with him earlier to give my final ok. Anyhow I gathered up the nerve to call him this evening and he's coming back Thursday to see what he can do.

He put new siding around the bottom on three sides, too.

Oh and he put on a new gutter and down spout. The old one was the old fashioned half round galvanized with the wire clips. It was rusted and full of holes. I told him I wanted to save the clips so he removed them for me.

As far as The Leaning Tower of Peesa, I asked him to come back this summer or Fall when he's between jobs and check it out. I'm not sure if it's bolted onto the rim of cement pit or not. May not be as easy to just jack up.

The house and all three out buildings are getting painted this summer too! I'm on a roll.
