I think a wall mount is more attractive and looks "cleaner", but there is the issue of the wires. If you can run all the wires behind the wall (putting a suitable receptacle there), then that would be my choice. On the other hand, especially if you have other things to connect to the TV (such as DVD, cable box, etc.) then having a bench-style cabinet on which the TV sits might be attractive.

How big is the TV and how likely might you upgrade it within a few years?

50" and ill upgrade it. The wiring is what i find to be the issue but i love your idea. A bench style cabinet may be much more attractive.

What I don't like is TV's mounted high on the wall. Call me old fashioned but I think they should be at eye level when seated. That usually means they can't be mounted on a wall.

When I am sitting at my desk, my eye level is about 40" above the floor. If a TV 55" TV has a height of about 30-35", then putting its centerline at 40" puts its base at 15-20" above the floor, which is high enough to mount the TV on the wall and have space for a low table, center speakers, or what have you underneath it. I still favor a wall mount.

Both options can look great, the wall mount is usually much more expensive to achieve. Anyone who has lots of electronic equipment has to have some sort of storage for them...so you will have an entertainment center/furniture in the room no matter what. That being said what is the purpose to having the furniture and then have the tv mounted further back on the wall...higher if wanted, but further back. Now if the tv was solo in front of the main view and the other equipment is elsewhere then maybe that will be a good idea mounted.....or space is a factor....but to me if the furniture is in front of the main view...I would stand the tv on it and bring it closer to the viewer thus making it appear larger. If the TV is over sized tremendously for the room , thus making it a space issue ....wall mount might be a better fit....and if there is virtually no equipment besides tv...and or soundbar....mounting both on wall and hiding wires never looks bad. If wires are seen on any setup it always looks bad.

To me places like bedrooms...TV"s must be mounted....I live in texas we have large rooms....but I still like the TV mounted and high but not too high. LIke slightly above center of height of room.

TV stands just take up too much space. Will make the room seem smaller.

Technospeak has good comments. If getting cabinetry , ventilation is important and depth, which are things not found on cheap furniture. If you intend to have a nice tv and also quality components (especially if you have high current audio equipment, Invest in a quality stand, don't go to walmart or kmart and get the bluelight special that you have to build out of cardboard.

Stereo racks are a cheaper alternative to large wide furniture, and if you can make this work for you, sturdy quality models can be found at good prices, and ventilation would not be an issue. Wire management will come into play, efficient use of wire choice, picking the right equipment.
