Have you compared it to the commercially available grafting anvils?

Can you easily sharpen the blades?

Are there any accommodations for sterilization between cuts?

Just had an idea...not sure from where I've picked it up.

Done my first bench graft on pears this spring and all took..but, planted out too early and some froze from a late frost.

Most of the material, [scraps] in the machine shop used for this. The knife came from a circular meat plate, [brand new] but was damaged, [chunks missing] when the operator in a meat plant started up this brand new machine wrongly.

I've built a belt knife sharpener, [motor, variable speed bought]. For polishing, switching over to a leather belt to get a razor edge, bought from Spain.

If need be, sterilization can be done easily, [wipe blade with 10% bleach] when blade is sticking out at the end of stroke. Not done here on my pears...no fireblight.

On the motor left side, made a polishing wheel out of MDF board.

I like growing in sand..makes nice feeder roots and easy to dig.

I'll try to get more pictures up soon...basically you see all the parts on the first picture, knife is held in a block of steel which is sliding by pulling on the handle along the other block of steel with 3 various size holes. The sliding block has 2 L shape guide plates on the sides which you can see, [can't see the 90degree L which slides along the bottom plate] mounted with allen bolts, there is some adjustment for minimum play, the knife just barely touches the bottom plate, it could touch but kept it up a little for minimum wear on the plate.. got it plated, nickel or zink. Perhaps a better way but more expensive would be is to have the moving plate run on rollers, more work also. So far I have no problem, slides easy as you can tell in video. Sometimes the very simple way is the best way.

Pears trees grow in sand into block concrete.

Good idea if you have no sandy soil...huge investment in a set up like this, how big is a slab of concrete block?
