what are the pieces of green tape representing?

its important to see what else the room will have, ie flooring, furniture to get the best idea of color for the fp

The tape is part of the hard wood floor installation; it is gone now as you can see in the one picture without them and without the grey fireplace untouched surface (it is now covered in compound prepping for paint).

Designhome, the room is a blank slate for furniture-- the flooring is already in the pictures- it is an engineered hardwood maple in a grey tone on tone.

This will be an extremely difficult room to furnish. A sofa opposite the TV will create a very narrow traffic patter for anyone trying to reach the patio door. How are you going to integrate the two ends. At the moment, the space looks like a black hole rather than a place to relax.

i think at this point any color furniture will work but depending on Fp color, your futniture will have to correlate with that or vice versa if theres a furniture style or color you prefer, the FP will have to not clash with that color


it is hard to mess up this room since youre starting clean slate

any ideas you have? generally start with an inspiration picture or idea

Ok, I've taken a leap in going in the grey tones in a big big way. The furniture in this room is my original stuff that I'm mostly replacing--- although the sideboard is hard for me to get rid of (I don't have any other spot outside of this room to put it).

I'm putting up the floor plan with the sectional I intend to order soon-- it has ends on it that are a 45 degree 'cuddler' that is sort of a small chaise. I'm doing a fabric in a very light grey that feels like soft wool so the room doesn't feel so heavy. Don't know if this couch is the right size for the room-- but its the right shape to view the linear fireplace from Bellfire that is 3 sided (its hiding behind the tv that I haven't hung on the wall yet). That couch choice is what will anchor all the other choices. There won't be room for the two bookcases that are currently smooshed together as I ready another room for them, and in their place I intend to put a nifty curio that has a stainless top that I will use for a bar and put an overhead cabinet (yet to be sourced).

I'm vexed by what to do in front of the front window; first, the view is of a golf course that is awesome to look at so I do want some seating there of some sort. Second, since the couch is so big it leaves little room for side chairs to stay there all the time but I would like to be able to take the chair option from the front window and move them easily for conversation purposes when we entertain. And third, I have a medium size dog that currently loves to sit in the oversized chair in the photo to see what is going on that whatever I replace needs to be dog friendly for him.

There will pretty much no storage in this room which is a small pain. With the book cases going all the great access to books for cuddling up in the chair in the front are still close by, but two rooms away... so I am open to ideas about how to get some storage in the room-- I am considering bookshelves where the small lamp is, maybe a corner tall shelving unit.

I'll have to figure out what to do with window treatments too-- I'm thinking some sort of fabric curtains rather than shades that are light coloured like the fabric of the couch.

Mostly I'm just updating the commenters who took the time to offer advice and encouragement earlier an update on where I am currently on the project. But any positive feedback or suggestion is welcome.

The couch here doesn't have the 45 degree ends, but its this modern style. The fabric in light grey (3rd pic) is what I'm thinking of covering with. The second pic is the niche to the right of the front window that is the entry into this room. The foyer is the step up.

This was a bit of my inspiration. And I found a fabric for chair covering potentially that is nifty.

Were you able to decide on a colour? Very curious to see how this turned out! :)

We went with a matching dark grey to the walls. Just waiting on the final furnishings to arrive and then I’ll have a better photo of the full room to put up. Looking forward to the fall when we can really enjoy the fireplace— it is stunning.

Final furniture arrived today and with the awesome fireplace the room is looking smashing. Art on the walls and some final touches and we are golden.
