Planting my tree in ground Question

Hi I am in southern Ontario Niagara falls and I want to plant my fig tree that's in a half barrel outside in ground when is a good time to plant it and the tree has been in the half barrel for 6 years, should I cut or prune some of the roots before I plant it.
