Re-Mastering a Master Bath

The
existing bathroom was cold and sterile, the absolute opposite from the rest of
the home’s décor. It consisted of a 60” jetted tub, a small shower with a
precast fiberglass pan, and a 60” wide double bowl vanity cabinet without any
drawer storage. The faucets were chrome but every other item in the room was
WHITE including the tile on the walls and floor. The only redeeming feature in
the room was that the toilet was in its own compartment.

The
homeowner’s goals included increasing the size of the shower and adding a
bench, keeping a separate tub and providing more vanity space with plenty of
drawer storage. The homeowner also wanted to use a color relationship of darks
and lights to create a rich visual statement. Selecting cabinetry with a dark
chocolate stain was our initial design choice and it became the color anchor
for the selection of the decorative tile and the solid surface quartz material.
Since the room has a limited amount natural light, light colored, large format
field tiles were used throughout the space.

The
new tub was repositioned so it became more of a focal point upon entering the
room. The tub was installed into a deck with a bench that offers an area to
rest and dry off after emerging from a long, hot soak or an invigorating
shower. Separating the vanities provided two independent grooming areas that
promote harmony between the couple, who often get ready at the same time. To
tie the room together, each of the mirrored recessed medicine cabinets was
framed with stained wood trim to match the vanities and each is flanked by a
pair of sculptural, handcrafted glass sconces.

The
shower area has a frameless glass enclosure, part of which sits on the knee
wall that acts as the back rest for the shower bench. Recessed niches offer
convenient storage for showering products. An oversized shower head recreates
the feeling of standing under a gentle waterfall while the visual texture and
color of the floor to ceiling decorative tile creates an interesting visual
effect.
