Red Riding Hood is usually a little longer in the stem around here. They seem a bit stunted in the picture.

That's what surprised me about how they looked in the garden bed. We all did a double take because there was hardly a stem in sight:)! I took the photos at different angles to see if I could capture the stem. Perhaps it will grow out more the few days following.

As an aside, species tulips like T. greigii are some of the best choices for perennializing or returning faithfully year after year. Many of the hybrids lack this feature.

Oh wow floral_uk! I checked out karenPA's greigii tulips and they were so much taller. No wonder it was hard to believe that the ones I shared were so low to the ground:)! Perhaps that is how they grow into the taller version? It was just odd to see them flowering so low to the ground like that (almost inside the leaves).

Gardengal48, thank you for that suggestion! I was thinking the same thing about planting them as a perennial after I read up on them. They are just lovely!
