Cedars

Reposting this from the trees forum. I have some cedars to put in pots. They came in containers and I noticed the soil is very poor, looks like mud, doesn't hold any water. Should I try and remove as much of this as possible before potting them? I'm thinking a garden hose would gently wash most of it away.

Any other soil tips for cedars? I was going to use miracle gro potting soil but was told its not very good. Appreciate any tips, thanks!
