Can this be hung without the chain links?

I have a 9 ft ceiling in my living room and am considering hanging this fixture over my coffee table eliminating the chain and attaching it via the rod directly to the ceiling canopy. Is that possible? How low would it hang from the ceiling in this configuration?

You can shorten the 10' of chain that it comes with to one link if you want. the dimensions of the fixture itself are 32" W X 23.5" H. Canopy hangs down 1 " so at its shortest it would hang down approx 25 inches.
