plum tree question

We have a plum tree in our house that is over 30 years old.

The former owners apparently never trimmed it until they put the house on the market two years ago. Then they hacked off so many limbs, the poor thing looks mutilated.

I heard from our neighbors that only four years ago, this tree was so heavy with fruit, it leaned over. The first Spring in the house, the tree barely set any leaves. This Spring the tree has more leaves, but no flowers.

I hear that extreme cutting can kill these trees but I think it's going to live. What are the odds that the tree will fully recover to flower and fruit someday?
