I planted a long row of mostly bare root raspberries here in zone 5b near Chicago around the 1st of April. They were the ones from HomeDepot that were wrapped in plastic and filled with moistened peat moss. The ones I selected had green growth on the canes which is what I thought I needed.

The beds were well prepared and when finished planting they were all about 8 to 10 inches aobve the soil. The green growth on the canes all are doing well still but there are no signs of new canes. I know it is likely way to early to expect that, but I neglected to snip them down to two inches above the soil which is what I understand I should have done.

Is that a problem to not have cut them back after planting and should I go ahead and snip them now or just leave them? I was surprised to see some flowers already forming on a few of the canes.

Also, what should I expect in terms of new canes, fruit, etc from a first year for fall bearing raspberries?

I did purchase a few potted plants from a local nursery which had much heavier growth and more canes but no instructions as far as a recommendation to snip back.
