What a beautiful home! I am scratching my head a bit and wonder if you mind me asking a few questions? The 2 inch floor panels would be true to period and more appropriate than 4 inch IF this is a "period" house? The grooves do make it sound like a prefinished wood flooring, but that may be a rule of thumb we use now, and I don't know that much about period Building materials. Plus sounds like there was something else under the wall-to-wall carpeting in the dining room, pair that with your decision to completely re-work the mantle and I think put a TV there, the tile in the entryway, the tile fireplace surround…so I am wondering if this is a (beautiful) reproduction home Not an antique.

I think a chandelier will be lovely in that room, I have to say that after getting seriously up charged to put recessed lighting throughout my new home, I absolutely hate it. I think it is the pits, except in th kitchen. Yeah, it's good for cleaning, but even with dimmers and the warmest LED lights available, I feel like I'm in an office unless I have my chandelier and lamps in use.

There's a good chance the floors are already done, but a caution about dark stained floors: they scratch they scratch the scratch. Plus they show dust like crazy. Hence they are a trend very much on the way out, especially among dog owners and parents of young kids. I wouldn't want to get too matchey with the walls anyway, you could end up creating a box like feel?

Finally, I feel like rooms with beautiful dark wood like yours brighten best with the use of color. You may be sold on white walls, but if you are willing to consider a color I think it could elevate your room even more. Especially with those beautiful linen sofas! attached are some of my fav "color brightens dark wood rooms better than white" pictures, not all your style but still illustrative. Printessa's pic above is alSo a great example. I look forward to seeing more!

Greenfish I am so a fan of green with wood too!!! We have a lot of the same tastes!! I love primary colors with Tudor style homes, lemon yellow, red, green, blue. I can see a couple of Tiffany floor lamps in here. If only the pocketbook was bottomless...... haha

The main feature of a Tudor home is the wood. Don't paint it. Allow more light in with sheer curtains, using honeycomb shades behind the curtains to allow light in even with the shades closed for privacy where needed. Keep the walls white or pale. Add framed mirrors to bounce light within the house. Trim trees and shrubs which block sunshine from the windows. Light carpets on wood floors will reduce the amount of wood visible.

Y-all need to scroll up and read. Chris and his wife have a great plan for this beautiful home. They are respecting it's history while making it work for their family. This is a huge undertaking. Wishing you and your wife the best Chris. Hang in there.

I didn't remember seeing anything about history from the OP Flo? I think it might not be as old as some think, which is fine-it just changes some feedback if you are the type (like me) who hates to see original features torn out. When I saw that they were taking the top off the mantle and apparently wiring for a TV there I took a closer look. Pre-finished floors, mantle surround, etc...still, beautiful woodwork! Hopefully we will get updates!

Sorry everyone.. this house was built in 1983, the house has some great details but it's replaceable. Flo Mangan thank you as several of these comments have already been addressed in previous posts! Keeping the trees sorry. The TV should be obtrusive.. it's the exact size of the inner mantle and will sit flush with the outer mantle. The ugly orange box and outlet is being patched up as it was done by the same guy who fell through the ceiling.

Chris the people who originally built your home did a great job reproducing that era. I'm sure it will be just as beautiful if not more when you & your wife get finished revamping it too!! I can't wait to see it!!

sharayak I guess I didn't see the relevance.. I wanted to update my home and keep some of the originality.

Ok revamping this thread a bit! We've been extremely busy fixing a lot of neglect with the rest of the house and are finally making our way back to the living room. I need some input on wall color and floor stain. Fireplace marble is removed and will be replaced with an over mortared cream stone and rock slab hearth? base. We will be glazing the fireplace as well to match the other existing darker trim.

I would match the floor to the trim and keep the walls very neutral and light. Benjamin Moore has some gorgeous creamy neutrals with warm undertones....

What a beautiful home!! I just want to cozy up by that fireplace and drink a little hot chocolate!

I would do the same thing Mimy suggested. Wood the same and light warm tones on the walls

Thanks for the replies! Hopefully will have it done in a couple weeks just in time for a christmas tree and a fire, but for now we'll just keep enjoying the fireplace off the kitchen.

Looks great! Did you make any changes in the entry? If not, consider painting the walls off-white and adding color to the ceiling.

Appreciate the input! I plan on keeping the ceiling white and adding several 3" can accent lighting.

Slowly but surely. The drywall behind the wallpaper wasn't prepped very well so a ton of skimming and priming was required to paint. We went with a Behr color called French Beige in matte.

The dining room trim was repaired, sanded, and painted. I'm very pleased with the colors in both rooms so far. My wife decided wallpaper for the dining room and we have some samples on the way. Additional lighting in the dining room to follow this week as well as new hanging fixtures in both rooms!

Nice little update. Fireplace isn't quite done, still waiting on better can trims, and we still need to decide on a hanging fixture. Slowly but surely!

Thanks everyone! The tall leather chair will eventually set by the fireplace (once it's done being worked on) with a small table etc. The TV was sort of a novelty that fit perfectly in the space however we will probably never watch too much tv in there unless there's a game on and we need the ambiance from the kitchen and dining area..

Whew! Things have been crazy. Really focused on the master and a multi level closet (yes overkill). Here’s a final pic of the living room minus some much needed end tables.

Flo - We actually pushed the couches in a bit closer as they were too far away. Maybe its the photo but there's enough room to walk through and be able to easily set drinks down. My father built the table too. =)

Art is art is something personal. I could really see just two very large abstracts/modern pieces, probably by the same artist, one over each sofa. It would keep the spare look you seem to favor but show that you are connoisseurs ;) take your time, but always keep an eye out for something that speaks to you.

I love the symmetry you have started...am wondering if two thin console tables, one behind each sofa with matching large scale lamps might be an interesting way to go since the coffee table which I love is such a big statement already ? I'll see if I can find some photos to share......
I also liked the idea someone gave about matching or coordinating artwork on the walls facing each other? Maybe some large scale Audubon birds? Or something more contemporary?....

I would look for oversized floor lamp and do a pair one on each end of sofas. Very dramatic in this time frame and coming back today fir right settings.

Ok so forget about my cheesy cut and paste, and I might have chosen more color for myself but I think you Would prefer a monochromatic look. Really just an illustration of my suggestion, art should be personal and not bought because it matches or is the right size, but I really like what a touch of modernism does in this room.

Contemporary art would be a great choice in this room. I would look for some color however, rather than black and white combo.

I call dibs on the wingback leather chair! Right where it is.
