Balcony decor plants help

I live in Chicago and want to grow some vines on the lattice on my balcony. Does anyone know of any fast growing plants for the midwest that would fill the lattice by mid summer? I was thinking of cucumbers, but they're not so pretty...
Also, should i paint the mint green side table white, navy, or keep it the same?
