Which flax? Cultivars range in mature size of about 2' to 6' and may be variegated, or not. If color is important, be sure to choose a cultivar that is stable--some are very eager to revert. Many of the hybrids also like a bit of afternoon shade, so they might not work if you are considering a hot sun location.

Generally, the big box stores have the lowest prices for the common landscape plants. Although the I was able to purchase 4" 'Maori Chief' at a nursery for $6 each, they are not often in stock. Have you considered requesting a special order?

Village Nurseries in Huntington Beach is a pretty inexpensive retail outlet. They are also a wholesale grower so they usually have a lot of stock.

I just bought one large, 5 gallon phormium 'Amazing Red' for $40. I split the individual fans and planted a total of 14 plants that were just about the size you would buy in one-gallon containers. If you break it down, it's as if I purchased 14 one-gallon plants at $2.85 a piece.

Last fall I bought one 1-gallon Daniella tasmanica 'tasred' for about $13. Again, I split the fans up and ended up planting about 24 individual plants. Now, 6 months later, I have 24 large clumps of it and each cost me about $0.54.

Josue, I love the idea of breaking down the larger sizes. I didn't realize that you could split the fans like that. I have so much to plant still on the property, it's daunting and I don't mind planting small sizes, especially as it's a bit late in the planting season and I don't want to shock the larger size plants with the heat that is about to come on.
