We have a very rustic water tower house we are renovating and are wrestling with the same issue. We live next to a redwood forest where the problem is termites. We are looking at corrugated metal and Hardyboard shiplap. Search on Houzz for corrugated siding and you'll come up with many examples. It's often used in mountain houses with snow, in a kind of mix and match way with wood. You can get it in colors, galvanized, or rusted. The other issue I see with your house is the mass of it and the big flat expanses of one color and material. If you used two kinds of siding you would break it up and the exterior would be much more interesting. If you painted the trim around the windows a contrasting color it would also make the exterior more distinctive.

thank you for your ideas. I will do a search for that siding. we live in the northeast US and have the same issues of woodpeckers and termites and yes snow.

we looked at Mastic and Certainteed siding and really not happy with their cedar impression 7" single blend look, not authentic enough.
