The rule of thumb is water when the mix is dry. Since, your mix doesn't hold on to the water you might have to water your plants every day. Possibly two times a day.

The mix of ingredients that you have there will work well. I am not sure that the Clay beads would be necessary, but would not be problematic.

When you think of your soil being wet, because of the water going right through. The water that you put through the mix will be retained on all the surface areas of each particle. It may not seem wet as Peat Moss or Coconut Coir would, as it would be more compact and retain water much longer.

So much of the use of a gritty mix, is just becoming familiar with using it over a fine particle mix such as Peat.

For someone living in Florida, Arizona, Hawaii. They could grow in a Coir, humice based mix without to much of a problem, but in a colder climate.
Even if only cold for 4-5 months, makes it more difficult to manage the watering and drying back. In most cases when we live in a colder climate than those mentioned above even with bringing them inside for the winter, the soil does not dry back at the same rate as when we have them outside in the summer. A real balancing act, but you will make it through. You are diligent and positive in your approach.

For myself, I am glad to be using it. It has saved many plants over the winter months.
