Either would look nice, I went with white doors and I'm always cleaning them dust, fingerprints and scuffs tend to be a bit obvious especially with kids.

I am trying to save to buy wood doors. I would stain them to match the floors and leave the wood!

I have wood door with white trim and I really like it. My doors are from the 90s so lighter in stain. I like them, but I like a slightly darker stain like in truey's pic and these pics:

There is nothing wrong with doing the classy, historic thing in a new build.

I, too, prefer painted doors in a new home. I love the doors in R. Ge's photo but it looks more appropriate in his/her Vintage home. The simplicity of your door (beautiful btw) seems to lend itself to paint. Your floors are dark and I think dark stained doors would not complement them.

It is easier to paint them later if you stain than to un-paint them later if you paint and change your mind. I would keep the wood, those are nice doors. They deserve beautiful knobs.

Are they solid wood doors or plywood? If they are good, solid wood (they look like oak) then staining them would look great. If they are just builder-grade plywood, then paint them.

Diana, they are solid wood doors.

Solid wood looks best stained. When builders put in white doors, they use MDF doors because it paints up better and is more stable to changes in temp and is cheaper. Changes in temp causes hairline cracks in the paint at the joints of solid wood doors.

stain for those doors. What jhmarie said. love the color of truey's door in the first pic. Try a walnut shade (no Minwax). General Finishes has a Spiced Walnut that is a nice warm medium shade.

For truey - no, I don't think you should paint your doors! They're beautiful. I'm assuming your home is an original Victorian, not a repro? Even if it's a reproduction, I say try to maintain the period character as much as possible.

I wouldn't have spent the money for veneer doors if I were going to paint them. Grain doors just don't take paint as well as a molded solid door.

Stain them with a stain that complements the floor

Just put in all new doors, mahogany. But mine were stained and finished before installation.

Is the same door you have, only mine are mahogany wood not just stained mahogany. They are heavy doors, but the reason I went its them is I grew up with mahogany doors and then lived in a house with painted doors. NEVER again painted doors, they look like crap all the time with scuffs, finger prints, paint chips, etc. No amount of magic eraser could ever keep up. So this time I went all out and got what I wanted = mahogany. The only door that isn't - the one to the garage, which here requires a steel fire rated door.

I had the same dilemma...and decided to do both. Maybe a dark mahogany like bellburgmaggie fabulous doors in the center pieces...with white trim color on the outside pieces.

One thing make sure your door trim is sufficient to handle the wood stained door, meaning not skimpy. If anyone has to go this route, the difference between regular wood doors and mahogany was not enough to make a difference cost wise - especially for the scale of my project. I realize everyone wants white everything, its just not me and its just not my house. Personally, I think beautifully stained wood doors always look better than white painted MDF looking painted doors. So important was the look of wood doors in the history of our country interior design wise that they would faux finish pine doors to look like mahogany.

We built a metal barn and turned it into a custom home. We have white trim and rooms with different wall colors and some wood floors. Also some tile floors. We have farmhouse/ transitional style and these stained doors. People always compliment our choice.

Paint the frame white and doors black , very modern , the colour is nice but not with dark floors.

For the people who have wood stained doors, are your closet doors also wood stained? And what about the inside of your exterior doors? I am inquiring for my new build.

Yes - my closets and inside exterior door - are also stained wood. The exterior door is actually a fiberglass which was stained as recommended by the manufacturer with a gel stain and finish. The closets are not paneled like the interior doors - we did not have enough money for that.

Truey, what stain have you used?

Currently finishing our self build and putting solid wood stained doors in with read wood floors! White is a beautiful option but wood is classic.
