Today you can do so much with ceramic, natural stone or porcelain tile. With the right tile setter, you can tile over the existing brick face and hearth (floor in front of fireplace opening). Design with tile that offers a bit of mid century vibe and now the focal point is stylish and sets the right tone for your dining table and chairs. Consider a classic white stone subway tile in a brick pattern, or a mosaic pattern like a hexagon or herringbone. Ceramic is less expensive and doesn't need to be sealed. Either way you get a fantastic look.

May I suggest you edit your room. Critical to successful modern design is simplicity.

I also would like to see the white left wall painted a deeper color to help visually widen the room.

The table needs to pulled out at least one foot.

I'm suggesting this because I think there is enough wood in the room. Introducing simple tile and metal will add variety and interest.

I like the gray color tile in a simple design. Also painting the wall is a cool idea. Just wondering how to decide where to stop painting, since the wall runs into the "dining area" with all the chairs :-) and then into the kitchen. Here's a photo from standing in front of the fireplace.

ok on the gray simple tiles for FP surround - will look great. Are thinking of going up to the ceiling or installing a MCM vibe mantle so that you can easily keep your TV there? Decisions, decisions!

From your first photo, I saw no color in the room but now I see your Red, orange and blue pillows.

It would be cool to choose one of those colors for your accent wall. Bold but very cool. Will help you pick the right shade if you desire.

You would continue the color accent wall right up to the edge of the upper kitchen cabs - that is the natural break.
