I wouldn't sweat it; that's sap coming from the tree. Perhaps the rootstock is in an "omg push growth" mode, moreso than the scion (e.g. the Gold Nugget) can handle.

I would say gummosis on new growth and I would remove the affected areas. Inside the branch you will found pockets of sap that will prevent the branch to age properly.

the brown sap is through out the tree. I broke the top when i transported it home. I used parafilm to wrap the break. But the sap shows on other parts of the tree too. Sounds like it isn't 'contagious'? I will try removing the affected areas. The spot I want to move it to is closer to the other citrus trees. Should I wait to transplant it? It was planted a bit over a week ago.

I took another look at the tree and there's crystal sap everywhere. I would have to strip the tree bare, maybe top it off? to get rid of all the little brown balls.

In my case the sap was only on new growth, so a length of only 2-3 leaves was removed from the tip of the branches. I would think twice before bare strip the tree.

Maybe it is too much fertilizer, or maybe a fungicide will help. You could wait a little longer for some other opinions.

I had once a lemon grown from seed which formed crystals all its life. It reached around 7 years of age, was 1.5 meters tall and survived all sorts of stress, it was just hanging around. Today I'm astonished how it did make it so far.

It died 6 years ago, our dog chewed it badly as a pup.

Edit; I think it was forming those crystals due to overwatering.

Junk: - if I remember correctly, Menlo Growers has all their citrus under tents / screening. Did you get one of those? - - - I see a bit of light intensity spike induced yellowing on the leaves... and wonder if the sudden change from under screening to direct sunlight may be contributing to the sap flow. BTW: I am seeing allot of sun scorch on my own tree's new flush growth with the last few days of sharply higher temperatures (and sun intensity).

I also did have sap flow on my Lisbon lemon several years ago. I treated it with several doses of Agri-Fos. It turned out the sap flows were from areas that were recovering from freeze damage and all turned out just fine.

George - yes, i drove over to Mike's other property and picked my GNs from the screened tents. I am hoping it's nothing serious and doesn't spread to my other citrus. question - how long did your GNs take to grow? most of the other trees I planted are showing new growth or blooming. I had a dwarf GN in a pot 2 years ago. it didn't do anything for an entire year. New growth and flowering started in the 2nd year after i transferred it to a pot. Does this sound right?

i love it! great trees! I see orange globes of heaven hidden in your tree. This gives me something to look forward to. is your friend's on c-35 too? do you have a pic of the shovel support? Where did you plant your new GN? I have a long wait. My kishus will keep me company while I wait for the GN, LxN, and tangos.

Jontte - you may be on to something. i water every 3-4 days. Today, i noticed it wasn't draining fast enough. i still need to move it to a different spot soon.

so not properly draining and a sudden change of environment is stressing out the tree.

Sorry, I didn't take a pic with the shovel... It actually was there for a short time... but I swear it seems they listen and hear you speaking about the threat of shovel pruning... and get growing promptly !

Here is a pick of the new GN I planted in Napa - last week. I pulled a Bearss out to make room (no need to have 2 Bearss!). - and I will get rid of the stake in a week or two... potential for some high wind events the next couple of weeks..

ooops, I forgot to answer your question on rootstock. My GN's are on C35. My friends' GN is from FourWinds and on Cuban Shaddock.
