Two established limelights apparently dead

I am in zone 7, North Georgia. I have had three limelights in a hedge along side a storage building for the past eight years. They have gotten huge and were beautifully full of blooms every year. Two of those have not put any leaves out while the other (in the middle of these two) is fully leafed and healthy. All my other limelights and other multiple hydrangeas in the other parts of the yard and beds are all fine. A friend of mine about 20 miles away has also lost a limelight and a couple of other hydrangeas this spring. The dry weather late last summer is the other reason I can think of for this loss. Has any one else suffered such problems with any of their hydrangeas?

I lost one over the winter months too several years ago. The drip irrigation system had a problem and was not watering in that area. A nearby evergreen reacted to the problem and I found out/fixed the issue but apparently not quickly enough. Proves that they still some moisture, especially if the winter is dry. I wish they could give us a sign when they are leafless but testing the soil for moisture is all I can think of...

I've had a few panicle hydrangeas have select branches that are putting out nada with zero explanation, which is disheartening because it sometimes takes time for the plant to develop "enough" branches.

Maybe H P's don't like the mild winters people have been having??
