HELP: choosing a very small shrub

I would like to plant a small shrub that grows to or can be trimmed to within 30" around, is green all year, zone 8a, will be in shade that begins in early afternoon, and requires very little watering once established.

We currently have Knockout Roses and English Dwarf Boxwoods in the flower bed that it would be joining and would love something that pairs well with these. We have been happy with how little care these require once established and would like something along the same care level. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!

Everything requires at least some watering except maybe prickly pear cactus. Consider maybe a dwarf yaupon, Harland boxwood, dwarf aucuba such as 'Rozannie', Satsuki-type azaleas (Gumpos, 'Chinzan', etc)-- although they'll need more water. Can you tell us where you live approximately? Is this an arid zone 8 or a more humid zone 8?

Whether watering is needed depends on the climate in a particular location. In many places, my garden being one, once a shrub is established, it will not need watering again.
