Nothing to be concerned about. It is just showing some damage from transport/planting.

Thank you Gardengal! My wife will rest easier, it was her favorite of the trees we planted. I have learned a lot from browsing the forums, especially from the likes of you and Ken_Adrian. Thank you guys for helping so many of us novice gardeners who are learning the passions of creating our own private oasis! Hopefully as I learn and experience more, I can contribute more.

I have a similar situation (bloodgood), but more widespread. The tree was planted almost 2 years ago. The same color spot, on the leaf, but near the stem. Most leaves appear to be drying out that have this. YIKES. Anyone have any ideas, please speak up!

Totally different situation than the OP's. Can we see photos of the whole tree? Are entire branches wilting?

I have the exact same thing going on with my fireglow that was planted a few years ago. (The white/brown spots/fringes as in OP's photo) Obviously not transplant related in my case. I suspect something fungal, and I blame the extremely cool and damp month it's been with very few sunny days.

The situation with my tree has gotten worse, but I suspect it to be from the two nights we had last week that dropped to freezing temperatures. Rare for this time of year, but I now have leaves drying up on 2 Japanese maples, including the one with the white spots that started this post.

chsigx, have you experienced this before? If so, did they recover? Guessing this season, the branches which have this are done, hopefully they can sprout new leaves next year?

My experience with Japanese maples is not so long. First one planted last spring, and two more this spring. The bloodgood planted this spring showed the first white spots four days after planting, and appeared to not get worse. Then we had two consecutive nights that hit 31 and 32 degrees. A couple days later, both newly planted JMs showed drying leaves and the white spots got worse on the bloodgood. The other recent planting is a Shishigashira, did not show white spots, only the drying of the leaves after freeze.
The one cutleaf we planted last year has not shown any stress, but was barely starting to leaf out when the freeze hit.

AccuWeather is showing GR hit 31 degrees Monday and Tuesday last week, I don't know about your specific area. But maybe you are seeing after effects from a late freeze as well?

Freeze damaged JM's almost always releaf. Even a mid season leaf drop.....due to drought, etc........will create a situation for refoliation. IME of growing and selling these trees for several decades is that adverse cultural conditions - the late spring freeze, drought, etc. - that cause premature leaf drop are nearly always recoverable, whereas pathogenic conditions - a disease - are not.

last week .... most of lower MI did not get a frost... but a deep freeze ... and lake MI didnt help you at all ...
