Love the look. The plants/flowers are beautiful.

There's some vinca vine,lilies of the valley, I don't know what the bluish purple flower is. This drive me crazy when it's planted altogether. However I don't think it originally was planted like this. It's just overgrown. You guys agree it's beautiful. I need to suck it up and let it go!

I'd mulch around the tree and plant contrasting caladiums there.

There are wood hyacinth and lilies of the valley in the planting. They are spring blooming and will die back in the heat of the summer, not dead, just disappear. There is also a green and while foilage in there, maybe vinca vine. You can't really add anything or remove any one plant. They are very intermingled at this point. It's all or none.

So it looks like they just need some definition like the above posters mentioned. You have a couple of options though to add interest at times of the year other than spring.

Depending on the sunlight available, adding taller summer blooming bulbs like irises would add interest even in spring. Whatever you choose, make sure you are adding some height since all the plants there are similar.

Another option, throw a big container in the middle of this patch once the flowers have died back a bit. You can throw annuals or other bulbs in the container that will bloom through the summer.

You will be able dig once the plants have flowered and gone to greens. Use a big shovel and remove a "chunk" vs trying to separate plants. Make sure to offer them to others in your area too! Good luck!

Looks like all are early Spring plants. Great for now, but will be a fading memory in a week or two.

See how it looks when they pass. You can add other plants at that time which will carry you over the summer. Hostas are later arrivals and then you can fill in with some annuals.

It is a great mess. It has a certain abandoned garden charm but unless that is desired I recommend a redo.

If yiou leave it I woukd put a dirt edge/trench about 6-8 inches from the fliwers and then it will look like a planned bed.

I agree, cut out a purposeful edge, pull away the stragglers, plant hostas maybe or a small shrub, a tall grass, or something for late summer (like rudbeckia lacinata or actea), the planter idea is not bad either.

I would also remove about a foot from around the tree making a dirt or mulch border there. I think you will be pleased with the results. Is the bluish flower purple salvia?

Someone thought they were wood hycinth. I don't have a clue. Actually I don't remember them from last year. This is our second spring in this house.

The blue flowers are definitely wood hyacinth. They are a bulb that will only bloom in the spring. Lilies of the valley are the white flowers. Both are ethereal meaning they bloom once a year for a short period. You need to decide if this is the look you want. Lilies of the valley can be transplanted pretty easily. Once the foilage of the hyacinth dies back you can dig up the bulbs and replant them in the fall. Everything is so jumbled up here that it will be difficult to alter without removing everything and trying to separate the plants. You will likely lose a lot.
