Flat screen TV above fireplace( 2ft deep mantle) or not?

We have a gas fire place in family room. Like to put a flat screen tv above it. Will it fine if we use fireplace with tv above? The mantle is 2 feet deep. Height of mantle from floor is about 4-5ft. Any suggestions? There are 2 big windows next to fire place. Thank you

We did that in our current home, but I added a piece of smoked glass on top of the mantel (with 2" overhang on 3 sides for symmetry) to protect the cable box and TV from rising heat -- which worked like a charm (though with a 2' mantel, you won't need that). The size of the mounted TV was constrained by the North-facing "wall of windows" around and over the gas fireplace in the vaulted family room, so it's not as large as we would have wanted, but it was really the ONLY place in the room that we could put a TV at all (since it is that room is open to the kitchen on one side, has angled walls for the backside of the stairs on another side, and gets full-on sun from the west on the only real wall).

Here are 2 questions for you to ponder: Does your seating allow you to recline with head support while watching tv? Does anyone in your household wear bifocal/progressive lens eyeglasses? These are two factors that may impact your enjoyment of a higher mounted tv. When the center of your tv is significantly above seated eye level, you may struggle with getting a crick in your neck while watching. Also think about possible difficulty in looking toward the glare of windows. Be sure shades/curtains can easily be drawn.

That's my problem too. That no other place I can put the TV. Husband not on board with over mantle idea. But thanks for the info, it will help! All walls have windows doors. One wall is free but my old tv ( projection) was there I hate the idea of doing it there again. The layout was aweful cannot see tv from kitchen. Thx

Yeah that's the no 1 issue here of neck injury! So many dicisions!

Look for an articulating TV mount that allows you to pull the TV out and down when watching. Of course, you won't be able to do this when you have a roaring fire.

Or get a tiny TV from the kitchen that you can watch when in there, rather than relying on poor placement in your main watching space.
We have something like this, and it's great.

Thank you everyone for all the help! Today I went to Best Buy and they will send someone to check the room and tv placement. In their demonstration, they did show the adjustable bracket that moves easily tv up to 90". That was a relief for me. Let's see how it goes.
