I'm not sure if this would help, but after hailstorms, I usually give mine a good soaking with kelp in a garden sprayer. I think it gives them a boost.

Thank you, Ken. I'm just west of Chicago. I don't know what else to blame. I'm just offering suggestions. I assume different Hostas tolerate things differently as MOST of my (over 200 varieties) come back just fine, but some (5 or 6) did not and one or two disappeared completely!

i would blame drought last year.. or late heavy fert .. not going into dormancy the right way .....or voles ....or something ... rather than bad winter ... they dont need snow cover .... and i am sure they got the requisite dormancy in your area.. regardless of how mild ...

can you think of any other info that might help ....

your only recourse is to dig them up and find out what happened ... then either replant or pot ...

I typically dig them up, put in pots and water hoping they "revive". Some do, some don't! Thanks for your thoughts.
