I don't think the door is an eyesore. Treat both doors the same with curtain panels that stack to the outside since there isn't room to stack between doors and fireplace.

I wonder how long you might live there - how concerned they are that it looks that way....

what to tie it in: is there a sunlight almost above it? what about a plant/tree? Art was good idea....
