Removing 4" granite backsplash from fridge cabinet

Another thread of mine spun off into this question... Can the granite backsplash be removed from the side of our fridge cabinet by a professional without damage?

It depends on what they used to adhere it.

I'd get a 1" strip of plastic laminate and snap it off to create an edge sharp enough to cut through the caulk, but not hard enough to chip paint. Cut through the caulk and insert several plastic laminate shims between the splash and the panel. When you get a a large enough gap, stick a scraper between the splash and shims and pry it off. You may get lucky especially since this is fresh adhesive.

Will need repair. It's glued. Painted finish will be not good on removal

Nope. It'll be damaged. BUT, that might be a good thing, since the fridge cabinet wasn't made deep enough in the first place; it's not even counter-depth!

Same thing happened to us... granite installer put a 4" backsplash along our refrigerator cabinet, which I never requested. The cabinet was stained cherry wood. Not only was the glue residue left behind, it also ruined the finish. The cabinet maker said for him to try and rematch the stain would have been difficult, so I ended up leaving that section of the backsplash. Took a while, but I got over it. Regardless, you may want to have them come and redo the refrigerator cabinet so that it sticks out a bit more to mimic the look of a built in?

The whole panel needs replacing to make it work so get a new panel have it installed without the backsplash which IMo should all be removed and a proper tile backsplash installed

It's not just a panel, it's a whole built in cabinet. So if it needs replacing the cabinet vendor would probably need to get involved as well, huh? I don't think the fridge is hooked up yet which is making it seem farther out than it normally would be...

The splash may be removed without damaging anything; let's not get ahead of ourselves, please. It may be possible to re-skin the cabinet side if it is damaged.

I recently had this happen also. I was wondering if "goof off" or "denatured alcohol" would remove residue left on the panel? Anyone have experience with this? These side panels are veneer not wood.

To remove the fresh splashback, grab a 1-inch plastic laminate strip and snap it off, creating a sharp edge for cutting through the caulk without chipping paint. Cut through the caulk, then insert shims made from scrap laminate between the splashback and the wall. Once a large enough gap appears, pry the splashback off using a scraper inserted between the splashback and the shims. You might be in luck with the removal, especially since the adhesive is new.
