Green House Completed!!!

After 18 months of on again-off again work I've finally finished my greenhouse - well, mostly. Still need to spread a little more straw in the aisles and plant the 4 furthest grow beds. Still waiting for the seed potatoes, artichokes etc. "Features" include 6,500 CFM swamp cooler, automatic vents (and the end opposite the one in the photo) drip tape on 2 separate zones, fertigation, and 8 raised beds with approximately 600 sq. ft, total. Also have an irrometer to test the soil moisture and automatically water when needed. On the nearest bed on the right you can just barely see some of the watermelon plants. Photo was taken about 4 days ago and now about 90 of the 150 corn plants are up along with the giant pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini. I'll post photos every couple weeks to document the progress if people are interested.

Wow! You may never have to visit the produce section of the grocery store again....

Looks good, curious to hear how it does in the heat of summer.

kudzu, I hope not! Maybe now I'll actually eat more of the good stuff. Melike, so far it's done fairly well the past two days of highs of 95.

Nice hoop house! I'd be interested to see how well the swamp cooler works out, as I may have to retro-fit something like that into my GH, Here in zone 8, summers are harder to deal with than winters, even with 50% shade cloth. The acre-plus greenhouse at the local botanical garden has an entire endwall that is a swamp cooler.

It's gonna be interesting to see how 'giant' pumpkins and watermelons do. Big fruit makes for big plants....

    Cheers

    Really spectacular!

I think corn needs to be wind pollinated in order to set good ears. Advice I've seen always said plant corn in large blocks rather than long lines, so that the pollen will blow well from each ear to another. Have you got a plan for blowers or something?

I've actually added a second swamp cooler. The first was working ok but not as well as I liked. I had an extra that I wasn't using so I installed that one and so far things are going fine. I'm attaching a few more photos that are 8 days old. I'll try to find my more current ones and post those as well. Walking down the isle now requires one to move the corn stalks out of the way. It's like walking through a jungle!

HCD, I've heard the same. I believe the swamp coolers will provide more than enough wind for pollination of the corn. I've used the same method in a smaller greenhouse with less swamp cooler cubic feet per minute and had no trouble with corn pollination. We'll see if it works this time.

Looking good. Let us know what your total harvest ends up.

I will let you know. We just picked our first zucchini yesterday. I can't believe how fast everything has grown. I'm wondering if I didn't give it too much nitrogen. Everything but the corn is flowering and there are about 15 watermelon in the very early stages of growth and 2 that should be ready to eat in another 10 days. I've been thinking about adding a dose of potassium and phosphorus to make sure things keep flowering but I'm not sure if it's needed. The photos I'm posting were taken this morning. It feels even more like walking through a jungle in there!

Came across this post while looking for something else which explains my posting. How are you pollinating the plants?

I had the same question about pollination. I’ve had to go around with a paintbrush to pollinate my eggplant, peppers, cucumber and watermelon blossoms during the summer as I wasn’t getting much fruit set in my GH. Despite having open door and windows for bees to come in and pollinate.

Great GH! I wish I had the space (or I need to just erect one over top of my existing raised beds!)

Pollination in greenhouses is not as big an issue as many think. My tunnel grown tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers do just fine wit nothing more than a few circulation fans.

At this time of year however, I'm curious as to wether OP learned any lessons from this year's plantings. Early growth looked impressive but my hunch tells me that that planting density and the crops grown just won't end well.

I plan to add some fans before next summer. That should help, I hope.

I also have noticed that if it is too hot, pollination doesn't take. Towards the end of the summer, I moved my eggplants (in pots) outside of the greenhouse and they seemed to get more fruit set.
