In real life only one tree makes it to replace its parent. That might be one seed out of 200,000 seeds in a 100 year life expectancy of the parent tree. It is probable that you did nothing wrong. It was simply destiny.

Tell us the condition of the seedling when it died. It may help someone determine what you might be doing. I've lost a number of seedlings from damping off. I have some peroxide that I need to spray on them to cut down on the fungus responsible.

There are a million real reasons beyond 'destiny' why tender seedlings die. Overwatering, underwatering, fungus, too humid atmosphere, too dry atmosphere, damaged seed, too cold, too hot, chemical toxicity, not enough light, poor soil, just to name a few.

I also lift the seedling up so that a half inch of root is above the soil line. This keep the moisture and damp-off from attacking the tender green stem
