Tree Line Advice (From a West-Coast native)

Newbie New Englander here! Zone 5b, Seacoast NH.
Our property is basically unlandcaped and I am coveting spring blooming trees of all varieties! I'd like to start planning a border for this tree line, but the ground is sloped and so eroded, the surface is covered mostly with roots. I've seen other threads discussing borders along tree lines, but not sure how much digging I can do without damaging the native trees. Should top soil be brought in?
The area gets late afternoon sun, with trees to the east casting shade most of the day.
