Finally!! I am starting my roses in containers.. there is so much literature on internet that I am confused.. I need suggestions on potting medium. I have miracle gro organic potting mix. What do I add to it before planting? Also I have soil from last year which I want to rejuvenate and use ( miracle gro is expensive)can I use plant tone in the containers? Add some compost? Add manure? .all pots are about 8- 10 gallon and I m planting bare roots.. Thanku!!

Remember that potting soil isn't actually soil, so adding your compost and manure is helpful for nutrients, but just a bit, maybe a handful of each. I top dress with it, but you can mix it in too. You'll want to fertilize regularly, with something that contains micro nutrients. And like ZZ said- roses love fish emulsion! It's kinda spendy so I only use it a few times a year. I also throw worms into their pots when I find them.

The container Gardening forum is very helpful and lots of good reading, but I try not to over complicate things. Hopefully some veteran rose growers will chime in.

I hope that helped a bit anyhow. :)

Just be careful with the Miracle Gro potting soil and small roses. I planted some bands in Miracle Gro potting soil earlier this spring (not thinking too hard about it -- I just got it because it was on sale) and one of them experienced fertilizer burn. When I switched it to an organic compost, it the rose recovered quickly. Only one of three plants had a problem with it, so yours may not be affected.

I forgot to add that I use Epsom salt in spring and mid summer. Because pots need regular watering, the fertilizer and nutrients are washed away fairly quickly.

I agree with KS. That's why I'd be careful with the amount of manure. It can burn tender new roots.

Oh ! I already potted 2 in miracle gro moisture control.. fingers crossed.. I didn't know about epsom salt. Can I add them to newly potted roses too?

Yes, Epsom salt will not hurt them. Just go lightly with it. I'm sure your roses will be fine. Let us know how they do!

If they are HT roses then pot might be wrong idea! Pick roses suited for pots.

Take as airy and light soil less potting mix as possible.

You cannot depend on organic stuff to feed hungry roses in pots. So stay away from compost or manure mixing in the potting mix. It might lead to water retention at lower layers.

Be ready to water twice a day at peak of summer. Mix very diluted plant food in watering can. I add 1 cap to 9 litre can when recommend is 2 and half.

Think in advance as to how to keep pots cool. Earthen pots beat anything else on market.

Background: A guy who started HT roses in black plastic pots. Lol. All are above 5 ft high and have roots escaping the pots and going into ground. This year all the roses go to ground. Waiting for peak winter.
