They need pollination...most are grown from seedlings and yes, another might do or plum.

Listen to Konrad, he knows his stuff. I find it interesting that a University could get it so wrong. Nanking is closer to plums, you can graft plums onto Nanking but I am pretty sure sour cherries would fail.

I came here today because my 6 or 7 year old nanking cherries flower but have never set fruit. They are next to a native plum (which does set fruit, hopefully I will actually get some this year), a yoshino cherry, and there is a sour cherry across the street.

I was wondering if anyone could advise me about it; because they are getting quite large and I am tempted to just shovel prune them if I am never going to get fruit.

Nanking cherries flower for a very short time and early, for a plum to be open at that time can be a problem...and the pollen is not always right. Best to have another Nanking. Your sour cherries won't do.

If your two Nankings are clones then that wouldn't' work either, hopefully they're seedlings.

Oh, no way to know that! I wonder if most mass production is by cloning.

I can confirm other plums and prunus species do NOT pollinate the nanking. At least the one's I'm growing. Japanese plums, korean bush cherry, apricot...also peaches in surrounding areas. This nanking fruited fine until it's pollination partner died.

Again this year my nankings were loaded with blossoms -- but very early, before I noticed any (or only a very few) insects out & about, and definitely before anything else was blooming. It does look like there are 2 or 3 fruits growing (out of hundreds of blossoms); keeping my fingers crossed.

I found over the years that Nankings are a hit and miss with fruit set...got rid of all about 20 bushes I had for about 15 years. Mine were in a low spot ..had tons of flowers but night cold they couldn't handle..at most I could only pick a handful.

What if i have two clones? Can i buy another clone from a different store and have those pollinate my current nanking bushes?
