Window Recommendations

Building a new home in South Louisiana. I am looking for recommendations on what windows to purchase or not purchase. All the windows will be 3'X7', single hung. Some will be joined to form a bigger window opening. Window World, Lowes, Home Depot..Alside, Andersen, Pella,....Vinyl, Aluminum....all variables that I've seen.

If you want comments, you should narrow it down to what you are interested in or what your architect is recommending.

Your general contractor when you hire one, will be the primary guide to as to what window manufacturer you go with, along with your architect but mainly the general contractor since it is his/her job to build the new home. Window World is for replacement windows! I think you should leave it up to the general contractor that you will be hiring to decide what windows company you should go with. But you can always get better then the "spec" windows the general contractor usually puts on new homes by paying a little more for the next better window line. Your general contractor warranties the home they will be building and should be the one to guide you to the windows he/she is best at installing in the new home and fixing any problems afterwards.

Sorry, I don't mean this in a challenging way, but I am curious. How does a GC not be familiar with window choices in your area?

Window World, Lowes, HD won't get you the best bang for your buck, and you may end up with complaints from your future home buyer.

Are you looking for lowest-cost windows possible, or are you building a more high-end home?

Also, wondering if you are coastal Louisiana and if so, are you required to get impact-resistant glass?

What does the end user of the home (i.e. you or your partner) want to look at? Wood, vinyl, aluminum, composite, etc?

Vinyl is preferred due to low maintenance and energy efficiency. Wood is not even considered. Composites over aluminum. Rank:Vinyl, Composites, Aluminum, Wood.

Friedajune....i am not a GC who builds homes...i am the GC for MY HOME...I am not an expert with windows but i know what is sold in this area. I am not looking for the cheapest nor am i wanting the most expensive...i never plan to sell. I am just asking for recommendations....I don't live near the coast, closer to Baton Rouge...so impact glass is not a high priority...

Vinyl is a great option and you would be hard pressed to find something more efficient. That said, it would need to be a higher end vinyl offering.

The best vinyl window brands are generally thought to be Okna, Soft-Lite, and Sunrise. However, I don't think any of them are available in Louisiana. Might be worth a call to the customer service numbers of each to see if you can find them in your area. Out of the brands you mentioned in your OP, I don't think you will be happy with the brands/sellers you've named, especially since you said you plan to live in this home forever.

I have a Marvin Integrity Wood-Ultrex sliding glass door that replaced a Pella. The Pella was awful, the worst. I really like the Marvin Wood-Ultrex as it has the beauty of wood on the interior and the low-maintenance Ultrex on the exterior. However, I am somewhat alarmed by the several posts on this forum which show the Ultrex peeling and cracking after a few years, necessitating refinishing under Marvin warranty. I am hoping that was a "bad run", and will not occur with mine, but I wanted to mention it.

None of those brands are available in Louisiana.
