Advice on Windows

We're in the process of evaluating new construction bids from a few different builders. So far, the quotes have included double-hung vinyl windows by Alliance and Jeld Wen and an upgrade option to Andersen 100 series. We're building near Grand Rapids, Michigan. We've not heard of Alliance windows before and we know very little about windows in general. What recommendations would you have for us as we evaluate windows? Does anyone have feedback specific to the brands listed?

Alliance and Jeld Wen would be a non-starter in my opinion. Take the upgrade to Andersen 100 series.

If you're soliciting competitive bids you should have a detailed set of construction plans including a uniform set of specifications so that all bidders are quoting the exact same components, systems, finishes, etc. If you don't it will be nearly impossible for you to compare bids.
