I've pretty much got my bermuda care program down to a science and wanted to share. Thanks to Texasweed for the Bermuda Bible, morpheus, reeljake, and a few others for advice. I used the Bermuda Bible as a foundation but I took advice from other users and different things I read online to come up with my program. I live in the Raleigh, NC area and my grass is sodded bermuda (tifway 419 if I'm not mistaken). This thread mainly speaks to fertilizer applications. However, I take the advice of watering only when my grass shows signs. I scalp my yard in March and maintain it with a great states 7 blade reel mower. I've never had a soil sample and never put down lime in my yard.
Fall / Winter
In the fall, I use a split application of pre-emergent 0-0-7 Lesco Stonewall. The first application normally goes down in October and I will put another one down 6-8 weeks later. I struggled with poa real bad about 4 years ago to the point I almost considered using a lawn service. I have no more problems after using a pre-emergent consistently.
I'll also put down either cracked corn or alfalfa pellets in September or October when my grass is starting to go dormant. I have read on this forum how it will help the biology of the soil. I don't know if it's true but it's cheap and it definitely doesn't hurt.
I'll put down another pre-emergent app in February or March depending on the weather.
Spring
When my grass just begins to come out of dormancy, I will once again put down cracked corn or alfalfa pellets. I have been using cracked corn more consistently as of late. After a few weeks, you will see long, thick blades of grass that has the texture of crab grass. If you pull it up, you'll see it comes from the cracked corn. It's not enough to discourage me from using it. It goes away quickly but it is a little annoying.
From the advice of the Bermuda Bible, I use Lesco 15-3-7 when my grass is 50-75% green. It does have some iron in it to help green up.
2 weeks after that, I use a liquid 15-0-0 fertilizer w/6% iron in a hose end sprayer. At this point, what I am trying to do is put down enough nitrogen and iron to help it green up quickly. My grass was pretty much fully green by the end of April. Most of my neighbors were around 50% green.
If I still need additional green up, I will put down another fertilizer 2 weeks later. I have some extra bags of different lesco fertilizers that I will use. This year my grass was already plenty green so I didn't do it.
After that, I use milorganite monthly until I get back to the fall. No more synthetics and no more pre-emergents during the summer months. The synthetics just push too much growth and make it hard to maintain with a reel mower. I get the green I want from the iron in the milorganite and my belief is because it's organic, it's feeding my soil (along with the apps of crack corn) to the point that I have never felt the need for a soil test.
I hope this helps someone. All this means nothing without pictures. See below.
This is about what it looks like when I put down cracked corn. This pic was taken 3/31/17. The 12th man flag is flying with pride. GO HAWKS!!
The below pictures were taken 4/15/17. This would have been sometime after I put down 15-3-7 but the day before I put down the liquid 15-0-0.
The pic belw was taken 4/19/17. You can see the additional and immediate green up from putting down the 15-0-0.
This was 4/26/17. The deepness of the green is a little deceiving because it was getting dark when I took the picture. Nonetheless, you can see it's almost fully green and out of dormancy.
These were taken on 4/30/17. It was still April and my grass was fully green!! Not bad. Because of the warm temps, rain, and 15-0-0 applied, my grass was growing like it was July. That's the main reason I didn't do another nitrogen application. You can see the waviness in the backyard. That's from the reel mower bouncing some because the grass was so thick.
This was September of last year. I had to go back to my rotary because the grass was too thick. I followed the same program I outlined above, so my lawn hadn't seen a synthetic fertilizer in 4 or 5 months.
That's it. I just wanted people to see what I have done and the results. I get compliments and questions about my yard all the time. Based off of what I outlined above, I don't know what to say when my neighbors ask "What fertilizer should I use to make my lawn look like yours?" Haha. Not an easy question to answer. Good luck!!
