I agree with counter height. Guests can sit on the other side and help which keeps them out of the main area and I use it at least 2 or 3 times a year for serving. It makes a great buffet area for large gatherings or just for placing drinks and appetizers before a meal.

I agree, the trend is to have your island at counter height for a larger work surface.

Counter height is much more versatile and is more comfortable to sit at.

It's easier for me to keep an eye on the small kids with the counter height island. With a bar height counter, I would have to walk around to get a good view of the kids. Even if you don't have small kids, it's easier to have a connection with guests in the living room when there isn't a tall bar separating you.
